The Los Angeles Lakers’ senior management might be planning to travel east. They are likely to meet with Philadelphia 76ers assistant Monty Williams between Games 2 and 3 of the Sixers’ playoff series.
Rob Pelinka, the General manager is spearheading the Lakers’ coaching search, in which former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Ty Lue and Williams are central candidates, league sources said.
The Lakers will interview Miami Heat assistant coach Juwan Howard and Lue this week. The Lakers received their permission to interview Howard, sources said.
Howard, will also meet with Cleveland for its head-coaching opening. He was a college teammate of Pelinka at the University of Michigan. After Game 2 on Monday night, the Sixers-Nets series has two off days on Tuesday and Wednesday before resuming in Brooklyn on Thursday for Game 3.
Williams returned to coaching this season as a top assistant to Brett Brown’s. After the death of his wife, Ingrid, in early 2016, he spent the previous two years in San Antonio Spurs’ front office.
Williams left the Oklahoma City Thunder as the associate head coach in the aftermath of his wife’s death. He relocated to San Antonio along with his children, where Williams had his extended family.
Williams coached the New Orleans Pelicans for five seasons before his time with the Thunder. He reached the playoffs in his first season and last season, i.e (2010-11) and (2014-15) respectively.
He also won a gold medal at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016 as part of Mike Krzyzewski’s USA Basketball coaching staff.
