There was some evidence last week that Google planned to distribute system updates using its Play Store. The system updates have been accessed through the Settings app for Android’s entire history. So moving them to Play Store would be an interesting move. It appears now that the rumors are true, as multiple Pixel owners have reported seeing a ‘Google System Update’ notification on Android Q Beta 2.
If sources are to be believed, a ‘Google System Update’ notification is appearing on Pixels running on Android Q Beta 2. Tapping on the alert doesn’t do anything. However, soon after the update is complete, the phone reboots automatically like Windows 10.
It is still not clear exactly how the process works and what are the benefits to the users or manufacturers. It is also not clear if this will remain exclusive to Pixel devices, or if other OEMs will be also be able to use it. We might get more info on this at Google I/O, where the company will discuss its Android Q OS at length.
