President Trump filed a lawsuit on Monday against Capital One and Deutsche Bank in an attempt to block congressional subpoenas for his business records. He claimed that House Democrats are simply attempting to harass him.
Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Reps. Maxine Waters, D-Calif. called the Trump suit “meritless.” They claimed that the President’s suit was a tactic to delay accountability. Schiff is the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and Waters is the chairwomen of the Financial Services Committee.
Schiff said at the time that the subpoenas were part of an investigation into the allegations of potential foreign influence on the United States political process.
Earlier this month two House committees subpoenaed Deutsche Bank and many other financial institutions as part of investigations into Trump’s finances. The lawsuit by Trump, his sons Donald Jr. and Eric and Ivanka his daughter, was filed in Manhattan federal court. The Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust and The Trump Organization are among the other plaintiffs.
The Trumps want a federal judge to declare the subpoenas unenforceable and unlawful. The lawsuit also seeks to block financial institutions from disclosing information and complying with the subpoenas. The banks didn’t respond to requests for comments.
